October 2014 SUFC and 3D Printing in California
Sticking Up For Chlldren made progress with new pathways in California and New Orleans this past September. On September 8 and 9 in San Francisco we learned more about how our partners in Haiti and New Orleans may use 3D printing to generate parts for prosthetic arms, legs, hands and feet. Brock Hinzman and Eileen McGinnis of the Better Futures Network again helped us to learn. Brock is a friend from distance-running and a leading commentator on 3D printing in the 21st century.

The panel concerned management of care for amputees in the developing world. We met surgeons from Haiti, India, Kenya, and 15 more nations. We found out about the great need for prosthetic limbs around the world and about material and cultural challenges involved in amputees' receiving and accepting prostheses that work for them. We saw how our partner students at F.E.P.E. and College Canape'-Vert in Haiti and at N.O.Y.S.E. and the Kuumba Institute of the Ashe' Cultural Arts Center in New Orleans could contribute with their creativity and sensitivity. The possibilities available through 3D printing appear endless! http://www.boredpanda.com/3d-printed-super-hero-prosthetic-limbs-enabling-the-future/ On September 25 Sticking Up For Children again partnered with Make Music NOLA. The 9th Ward Kick-Off Party for Make Music NOLA brought dozens of students of stringed instruments into the art-park setting of Piety Iron Works in New Orleans' Bywater. We'll combine with Make Music NOLA for another Music & Arts Day on Wednesday, October 15.. The final piece of great news from September occurred with notice that the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival has awarded us with a second grant for a second Festiva de Drumsticks! Festiva #2 will happen sometime in the 2014 holiday season, late November to middle December, and again feature superlative drummers and other, comparable musicians and an auction of dozens of our 'Beautiful
